It’s All About The Hair Follicles
Exactly how long will laser hair removal last?
Is laser hair removal permanent? The short answer is technically no, but in practice, after the treatments you will not see hair on your arms. Maybe this won’t be straight away though, so there is no point checking your arm for hair growth every single day! Let me explain in a little more detail:
In my article how does laser hair removal work, I talked a little bit about the various phases that hair growth goes through. Let me go back to that. I said that hair has 3 phases of growth; active, regressive and resting.
These should be self explanatory but the active phase is exactly like your hair is now, regressive is when it’s preparing for the next phase (and when it usually falls out) and resting is when it’s regenerating to start growing in the active phase again.
Because in the regressive and resting phases there isn’t actually much / any hair in your follicles, the laser hair removal treatment doen’t really have an effect – it cant see the hair.
This is why several treatments will be needed weeks and months apart, to be sure you get all the hair in its different phases.
So to start with when you’re asking is laser hair removal permanent you shouldn’t be thinking about all hair in a certain area, but individual hairs in their respective stages.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
If you want a 100% permanent hair removal solution you can always get electrolysis. Electrolysis is a pretty painful and inefficient method though, also it can take years to complete.
Electrolysis focuses on a single hair follicle at a time putting a needle into the skin and hair follicle and then electrocuting thefollicle to destroy it, and make sure a similar hair follicle will not grow there in the future. So yes, you have to do this for every single hair follicle in the area you want!
One benefit of electrolysis is that it can be used on all hair types, regardless off race and hair color. If you want to know more see electrolysis vs laser hair removal.
Now that we know about the stages we can look into more detail why into whether laser hair removal is permanent. The rate at which the body repairs itself is actually pretty fast so over time new hair follicles may be created by the body. However these follicles shouldn’t be as strong as the older ones, and therefore the hair that they produce will be very fine, and light in color.
That’s why in practice the hair removal is permanent, yes you will have hair growing, but it will pretty much be imperceptible to the human eye. With an at home laser hair removal system you can give yourself another treatment if you want to be 100% hair free anyway! So laser hair removal is still one of the best treatments you can get.
In conclusion to answer the question “is laser hair removal permanent?” we can say this; laser hair removal is as good as permanent, it does permanently destroy the hair follicles, but the body can create a few new ones.
The only alternative; electrolysis will be far too painful for the normal person, and probably would only be beneficial to professional athletes, you know what they say; no pain, no gain!
But for all intensive purposes (and depending on your definition) laser hair removal is permanent.
